How To Make A Laser Cut Acrylic House Number Sign

Modern acrylic house number sign displaying 26 Edenvale Road, mounted with standoffs on a contemporary home exterior

A well-designed house number sign does more than help visitors find your property. It creates a strong first impression and adds a modern, premium touch to the exterior of a home, Airbnb, office, or guest house.

In this project, we designed and manufactured a laser cut acrylic house number sign using layered acrylic, precision laser cutting technology and premium standoff hardware. The result is a durable, professional-looking address sign with a clean floating appearance.

From refining the design in CorelDRAW to preparing the file in LightBurn, cutting the acrylic components and installing the standoffs, we’ll show you exactly how this laser cut house number sign was created and why products like this can become profitable additions to a laser cutting business.

What Is A Laser Cut House Number Sign?

A laser cut house number sign is a custom address sign manufactured from acrylic, metal or other laser-compatible materials using precision laser cutting technology. By combining accurate cutting, layered construction and standoff mounting, these signs create a premium floating appearance while remaining durable enough for long-term outdoor use. Laser cut house number signs are commonly installed on homes, Airbnbs, guest houses, office buildings and estate properties.

House number signs remain one of the most profitable and practical products in the laser industry.

Unlike many decorative products, they solve a genuine need while also allowing homeowners to personalise the appearance of their property.

Benefits include:

  • High perceived value
  • Low material usage
  • Easy customisation
  • Strong demand
  • Nationwide shipping potential
  • Suitable for repeat orders

Because every address is different, customers are often willing to pay premium prices for a custom design that complements their home’s architecture.

Designing The House Number Sign In CorelDRAW

The design process began by creating the main sign layout and establishing the overall proportions. One of the most important aspects of house number sign design is maintaining balance and symmetry. The base shape was adjusted first before refining the frame and surrounding elements.

Node editing played an important role throughout the project. By refining curves and adjusting individual nodes, the design became cleaner, smoother, and better suited for laser cutting. Small adjustments during this stage often make a significant difference to the quality of the final product.

Guidelines were used extensively throughout the design process. They helped ensure even spacing, accurate alignment, consistent proportions, and balanced placement of the numbers. The spacing of the number 26 was adjusted and centred using guidelines to create a more visually pleasing result.

The contour tool was used to strengthen the frame, refine the design, create consistent spacing, and prepare the artwork for production. It also helped position the mounting holes evenly through the design so the sign could achieve a clean floating appearance once installed.

How Design Skills Create Better Products

Many successful laser businesses discover that design skills become just as valuable as the machine itself. In this project, techniques such as node editing, guidelines, contour tools, and alignment played a major role in creating a premium finished product.

A clean design leads to faster production, better aesthetics, fewer mistakes, and more profitable projects.

Tools Used To Create A Modern Acrylic House Number Sign

CorelDRAW

Used for the sign layout, node editing, guidelines, number spacing, contour work and standoff hole placement.

LightBurn

Used to prepare the file, align the material with the camera, organise layers, preview cuts, and manage the cutting and scoring workflow.

Laser Cutter

Used to cut the acrylic layers and score placement guides for easier assembly.

Standoff Hardware

Used to support the clean floating installation style shown in the finished sign when required by the final build.

Materials Used For This Project

The project uses acrylic materials and hardware suited to a layered address sign with a floating appearance.

Materials included:

  • 3mm Matte Black Acrylic
  • 3mm Clear Frosted Acrylic
  • Acrylic Adhesive
  • Mounting Hardware / Standoff-Style Hardware

Acrylic was selected because it creates a modern premium finish, cuts cleanly on a CO2 laser, and works well for layered sign construction.

The Finished Acrylic House Number Sign

The finished sign delivers a clean, modern appearance with layered acrylic construction and a floating visual effect. It combines practical function with a premium look that suits residential homes, Airbnbs, offices, guest houses, and estate properties.

This also makes it a strong product idea for laser businesses that want something simple, customisable, and commercially appealing.

Project Technical Details

The production workflow includes file preparation, camera alignment, material positioning, scoring guides, acrylic cutting, and final assembly planning. Settings should always be tested on your own machine and material before production.

  • Width: 580mm
  • Height: 440mm
  • Thickness: 6mm layered acrylic

Acrylic was selected because it delivers a clean modern finish, cuts accurately on a CO2 laser, and works well for layered construction.

The LightBurn workflow includes camera alignment, material positioning, layer organisation, and previewing cuts before production. This helps ensure the acrylic is placed accurately and the different design elements process in the intended order.

Blue scoring guides were used to help align the acrylic components during assembly. Use these settings as a starting reference, then test and adjust for your own machine, material, and finish requirements.

One of the biggest lessons from this project involved lead-in and lead-out settings. While these settings often create cleaner entry and exit points on larger shapes, they can behave inconsistently on smaller detailed designs.

For this reason, the final matte black acrylic layer was cut using a standard cut layer instead. Because the acrylic retained its protective film, the laser’s initial pulse remained hidden and did not affect the final appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Acrylic is well suited to CO2 laser cutting, especially for signs that need clean outlines, number shapes, mounting holes and polished-looking edges.

Acrylic is a strong option for modern house number signs because it is durable, visually clean, lightweight, and well suited to layered laser-cut construction. The best material still depends on the look, mounting method, and environment.

They can be suitable for outdoor use, but that depends on the acrylic type, mounting method, adhesive, hardware, and exposure conditions. Outdoor suitability should be confirmed for the final material and installation method.

3mm acrylic is a practical choice for many modern layered house number signs because it is clean to cut, easy to work with, and suitable for detailed shapes. Larger signs may require different construction choices.

Floating house number signs are typically installed using mounting hardware that holds the sign away from the wall surface. Accurate hole placement and balanced spacing are important if that look is part of the final build.

Yes. They combine strong perceived value with relatively low material usage, and customers are often willing to pay more for a design customised to their property.

The best machine depends on the size of signs you want to produce and the volume of work. A Thunder Bolt suits smaller products, while Thunder Nova machines are stronger options for larger signs and production workflows.

Yes, within the size and production limits of the machine. Hobby users can create smaller signs and samples, while larger businesses usually benefit from more bed space and higher workflow capacity.

CorelDRAW is a strong option for designing house number signs because it supports vector drawing, node editing, guidelines, contour tools, and clean production-ready artwork. LightBurn is then used for machine preparation.

Acrylic signs usually offer more design flexibility, layered visual effects, and a modern finish. Aluminium signs can suit different outdoor and industrial use cases, but they create a different look and production workflow.

Yes. Custom house number signs are well suited to online sales because each design can be personalised and shipped nationwide once the production workflow is established.
