Achieving the Perfect Engraving Setup

Initially, our tests revealed that the aluminum must be completely flat to achieve consistent marking. Setting the focus height was crucial, and we found that a height of 2.3mm on the z-axis via the LCD panel was a good starting point. However, this setting resulted in a reflective finish, which wasn’t what we were aiming for.

Adjusting for a Matte Finish

Our goal was a solid, matte finish that would appear uniformly black from any viewing angle. Further testing led us to adjust the focus out to 3.6mm on the z-axis, which provided the desired matte appearance. This adjustment was key in moving away from the overly reflective finish initially observed.

Addressing Challenges with Solid Blocks on Aluminum

Engraving a large, solid block on aluminum presents significant challenges, one of which includes banding effects due to the laser machine’s extraction airflow. To overcome this, we strategically relocated the plates to the left side of the machine, aligning them directly with the extraction vent. Additionally, we switched to uni-directional engraving. These adjustments were crucial in eliminating airflow-related banding, resulting in a uniformly solid and consistent engraving.

Optimal Engraving Settings

For the perfect engraving, we used settings of 18% power at 1000mm/s speed, with no air assist and a resolution of 500 DPI, all while maintaining the height at 3.6mm. These settings were crucial for achieving the desired finish on larger, more complex engravings.

Efficient Text Engraving

When switching to text engraving, which is less demanding, we adjusted the machine to bi-directional engraving to expedite the process. This change had no negative impact on the finish, demonstrating the versatility and forgiveness of laser engraving text on aluminum.

For batch processing, we recommend careful placement of the plates to avoid the disruptive airflow from the extraction system. Stacking the material underneath can also help shield the engravings from airflow disruptions, ensuring a flawless finish across multiple pieces.
